South Bristol Spindrifters 2015
The Team “The Spindrifters" are a jump rope demonstration team sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA). The team consists of 8 to 14 year old girls and boys attending South Bristol School. Team members travel in groups of 8 to 10. Their purpose is twofold; to demonstrate the health benefits and fun of rope jumping and to promote the Jump Rope For Heart student exercise event which benefits the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). The Spindrifters perform throughout the state of Maine. The AHA supports their travel to other schools who have signed up to hold a Jump Rope For Heart Event and have indicated that they would like a visit from the state demonstration team. They schedule 8 -10 schools to visit each year, traveling to 2 schools within the same geographical area on each of the travel days during the months of December, January, February, March and April. Once the schedule is filled for this year, interested schools will be put on a list for the following year.
The Performance The 25-30 minute demonstration begins with the fundamentals of rope jumping and progresses to complex, highly entertaining tricks. The demonstration includes short rope skills, partner routines, group routines, long rope skills and double dutch tricks. The performance is geared to and received well by all age levels. Coordinator Liz Giles-Brown, the physical education and health teacher at South Bristol School, is the originator and coordinator of the Spindrifters.
