Here you will find video, visuals, pictures, thoughts, and resources that will help you build a better understanding of what your children are learning in physical education at South Bristol School.

May & June 2017 |
Grades 5-8Grades 5 through 8 finished up their pickleball/net games unit at the beginning of the trimester (see March & April section for specifics. After finishing up that unit we started working on our Celebration dance for Connie's evening and then moved on to preparing for the Track & Field Meet we were invited to attend at Lincoln Academy. Students would ultimately have the choice as to whether or not they would test their skills at the middle school meet with other schools from the AOS but during the unit in physical education they were asked to choose two skills, do a self-assessment as to where they were starting, complete a before video, use the video learning resources provided (and me) to help them identify specific changes they could make for improved performance, practice with attention to those changes, and then complete an after video. This individualized type of learning requires a lot of self-discipline on the part of the learner. I have included two completed videos as examples of the final products.
Kindergarten & Grades 1-2Kindergarten, first and second grade students learned worked hard on their parts for Connie's Celebration dance and then moved on to discover some new activities they could play with their friends at home this summer. Learning targets each day focused on skills and strategies we had worked on at other times during the year. Each activity was modified to meet the needs of the participants. These two groups finished up the year applying their physical skills with their personal and social skills practicing making decisions with partners in a physical activity setting. They practiced their social intelligence as they chose between cooperative and competitive activities, working with a variety of partners within one class period. I was able to capture a few clips in the video below.
March & April 2017One of the units 5th through 8th grade students were involved in was a Pickleball/Net Games Unit. They worked to build the skills, knowledge and understandings seen on our unit visual pictured below.
During their pickleball unit, students set personal smart goals based on their own reflection of their skills and strategy. When they accomplished a goal, the took it down, gave it to me as being complete and set a new one.
At one time or another all students get to experience partnering with everyone else in class. This builds unity as well as character strengths.
Students have been working very well together.
We have spent some time in K-4 building volleying skills as well as basic strategies for net/wall games.
Watch as they Volley On...
First and second grade students had a chance to try their tactics in a one on one invasion/tag activity. We learned a bit about defense and offense.

Grades 3&4Grades 3 and 4 finished up a team games unit that focused on the skills of throwing, tossing and catching along with learning to make decisions as a groups. Like the other grade levels we spent some time working on Connie's Celebration dance. At the same time this group along with grades K-2 spent time revisiting skills we had worked on throughout the year to learn and participate in some activities designed especially for the back yard or driveway. The visual we worked from is pictured here. During the last several physical education lessons we started building a game of Muggle Quidditch - complete with quaffles, chaser, seekers, and a snitch. If you are at all familiar with Harry Potter you know what a muggle is and you definitely are familiar with the game of Quidditch. This is a multi-faceted activity that pulled in many skills and strategies these students had worked on throughout the year. We didn't get to finish building in everything but will pick it up again next year. We also spent time during each class period connecting to cardiorespiratory endurances. Students are able to identify activities they enjoy that contribute to improved endurance of the circulatory and respiratory systems. The video above served all year as our "connect" circle serving two purposes: bringing us together to begin the lesson and helping to teach a little bit about the heart and it's relationship to exercises.
March & April 2017This is the site our Pickleball Ladder Tournament. Partnerships competed against one another to gain spots higher on the ladder.
There were a lot of ups and downs but everyone's ability to play with social intelligence remained constant.
K-2 Spent some time working to build tossing, rolling and catching skills during some barrel ball activities.
The 1st and 2nd grade visual above shows how we worked to connect the activities we learned and participated in during class with enjoyment, willingness to try new things, basic skills and health related physical fitness.
Grades 3 and 4 worked to build group decision making skills, throwing, tossing, catching and team strategy by playing Hula Hut Throw Down.
Never the same move twice gets everyone moving and connecting to fitness immediately upon entering the gym for physical education class.
I've captured a little bit of what went in March and April. All in all it was a good couple of months moving and learning in physical education!

February 2017
I feel like February was a lot about snow and snow days... and they seemed to hit Wednesdays and Thursdays the hardest. We ended up missing a lot of classes but grades 3 and 4 rolled on in their inline skating unit. Grades K-2 continued to build fundamental motor skills and connect to fitness and we finished up our MVPA challenge unit with students in grades 5-8 designing some MVPA activities for everyone to try. Students were very creative, designing some very enjoyable ways to get their heart rates up and lots of steps!
January 2017
We have started the new year building new units. Each unit begins with a big idea posted on a visual. As the units progress we explore skills, knowledge, and understandings the relate to the original big idea. Students also find specific learning targets for lessons posted on the unit visual. You can use the images of our visual to have conversation with your children about what they are learning in physical education.
Students in 5-8 have been working hard to meet MVPA Challenge!
Grades 5 through 8 will be exploring moderate to vigorous physical activity and the benefits of leading an active lifestyle.
Below you will find some video clips from our cooperative challenge 2016. |
Students in grades 3 and 4 are beginning to choose personal learning targets from the portfolio sheet pictured below.
Learning to skate safely in a group is the 2nd step to success in inline skating!
Students on grades 3 and 4 have started their inline skating skills unit.
|
Students in grades K, 1 and 2 are relating the activities we do in class to fitness components and skills that they challenge. They will also be thinking about why they enjoy participating in different physical activities.

September - December 2016
Games of Invasion & Consensus Decision Making
Our middle school students started the year focused on learning to plan and work in small groups using a consensus decision making process and further developing their abilities to think tactically in games of invasion. This category of games includes many activities that children enjoy. An invasion game is any game in which one group of players try to gain posession of an object and invade another team's territory in order to score, while at the same time keeping the other team from doing the same. Basketball, soccer, football, hockey, lacrosse and the game of pinball you can see students engaged in below all fall into the category of games of invasion.
Parkour in PEStudents in grades 5 through 8 had fun learning parkour skills on the obstacles we set up in the gym. Each students worked frrom his/her portfolio and with iPads to learn and work through skill progressions, documenting their performance along the way. Some of their videos are included here.
Below you will get a glimpse of the work the first and second grade students were involved in during the first trimester. They were engaged in lots of activities building maniuplative skills and balance.
Manipulative Skills & More...Many of you know that I have a strong interest in the connection between the brain and body. My lessons are founded in the principles of brain compatible learning. Over the past several years there has been a lot of research done connecting movement and exercise to improved brain function and improved learning. The video below is a talk Jean Blayeds Moize, founder of Action Based Learning, gave at a conference for physical educators that would be interesting for anyone interested in learning more about the impact movement and exercise has on the brain. If you choose to watch, skip the first little bit and start it at 5:38.
The powerful link between Exercise and Learning |
Team K was busy exploring moveement and building basic skills. I didn't capture everything but you will get the idea by watching the video below.
Travel, Balance, Jump & RollI went looking for video of grades 3 and 4 from the beginning of the trimester and didn't find any... I must have been too busy teaching to get a chance to pick up the iPad but I did capture some clips from the second part of the trimester. I'll do a better job during the next trimester... Using the same set up we used in the 5-8 parkour unit, students in grades 3 and 4 worked on traveling, balancing and rolling in a variety of ways. Check out some of their work in the video below.
Connect! Each trimester all classes work together to build a "connect" learning circle. This creates a cognitive thread that we can use to connect to learning in almost every class. The two videos below give you an idea of how they work.
